Cabin air filter

A device and a method are provided for a cabin air filter to eliminate airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic chemicals from a passenger compartment of a vehicle. The cabin air filter involves a supportive frame configured to suitably orient the cabin air filter within a venting system of the vehicle. The supportive frame having a shape and dimensions suitable for supporting the cabin air filter within the venting system. A filter medium is kept within the supportive frame and configured to eliminate the airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic chemicals from air flowing through the ventilation system. The filter medium electrostatically attracts and agglomerates contaminants within the air flowing through the filter. In certain embodiments, the filter medium contains fibers treated with antimicrobial molecules configured to destroy microbes. In certain embodiments, the filter medium includes fibrous substances configured to discharge a fragrance into the passenger compartment.

BACKGROUND

 

 
An air filter is a device commonly comprising fibrous materials configured to get rid of solid particulates, like pollen, dust, mold, and germs from air passing through the air filter. Air filters are used in applications where air qualityis significant, especially in building ventilation systems, in motors, as well as in vehicle passenger compartments.
 

 
A cabin air filter typically is a pleated-paper filter that is placed within an outside-air intake to get a passenger compartment of a vehicle. Cabin air filters typically are uniquely shaped to fit into an available space within a ventilation systemof the vehicle. The cabin air filter may greatly affect the potency of the car’s air conditioning and heating functionality. Clogged or dirty cabin air filters may significantly reduce airflow through the car’s ventilation system, as wellas make it possible for allergens and contaminants to enter into the car’s passenger compartment. A drawback to traditional cabin air filters is that though most consider cabin air filters are usually believed to be highly effective, traditional cabin airfilters typically have a relatively low Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV), and thus allow airborne molecular contaminants and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) to input automobile passenger compartments. Further, many producers don’t list MERVratings due to their cabin air filters, misleading lots of users to assume cabin air filters are HEPA filters.
 

 
The other drawback to traditional cabin air filters is that clogged or dirty cabin air filters typically are taken out of the automobile and discarded, and a new cabin air filter is subsequently installed. Considering that there are millions of vehiclesthroughout the world, the volume of discarded air filters which could be eliminated from landfills is a staggering amount. What’s needed, therefore, is a cabin air filter configured to get rid of airborne air pollutants and VOCs without obstructingair flow through automobile ventilation systems, and also a cabin air filter which may be occasionally cleaned and reused.
